Wool Rugs |

Wool rugs have been part of the fabric of daily life and culture since Biblical times. Loved for its durability and versatility, wool is a natural fiber obtained through the shearing of sheep. The type and quality of the wool obtained in this process varies based on the breed of the sheep and the climate in which they are raised. Regardless, all wool fibers – and thus all wool rugs – have a natural ability to repel moisture as well as absorb it, making wool rugs a nature humidifier.
Because the surface of wool fiber is comprised of overlapping 'scales' wool rugs are also especially good at keeping soil and dust trapped on the surface of the wool rugs, where they can be easily removed by vacuuming. Additionally, wool rugs scatter light, thus minimizing the appearance of any stains or soiling. Finally, wool is a naturally flame-resistant material, and will self-extinguish without melting or charring. Wool rugs are usually not damaged beyond slight charring from ashes, dropped candles, or similar home accidents. Overall, wool rugs are an excellent choice for most homes, resisting wear, soiling, and offering an ease of cleaning.
Wool rugs do not give off contaminants. In fact, wool rugs tend to absorb contaminants impacting indoor air quality, including sulfur compounds, nitrogen dioxide, and formaldehyde, commonly given off in new building materials including furniture, paint, and in fuels. Once the contaminants have been absorbed into the fibers of wool rugs, they are trapped. Wool won't release them back into the environment, even when heated. Studies estimate that wool rugs can naturally purify the air in a home for up to 30 years.
Wool rugs require minimal maintenance beyond vacuuming, as well as periodic cleaning to maintain its beauty and appearance. New wool rugs will shed at first, as loose fibers are lost from the rug itself. This should only last a couple months. Regular vacuuming will combat this. Should a liquid spill occur, blot it up quickly with a clean, absorbent dry cloth. Then dampen another towel with hot water and use this to blot any excess or remaining stain up from the wool rug's surface. Finally blot the remaining moisture up with clean dry towels to sop up as much of the moisture as possible. Avoid using soap on the stain, as it is hard to get all of the soap out of wool rugs, and the remaining cleanser will only attract and trap dirt, and will cause dark dirty spots to form on the carpet later on. The coarse fibers can't be inhaled which further makes wool rugs great choices for those with asthma or severe allergies.
