Carpet Cleaning – Caring for Your Berber Carpet

For years people have said that Berber carpets are hard to clean.  In reality, once you know how to properly care for this type of carpet, it is not all that difficult at all.  Berber carpets are the fastest growing type of carpet in terms of popularity.  Traditionally, Berber carpets were only constructed in light colors that show dirt and stains more.  Modern Berber carpets come in a variety of colors and patterns.  The very tight weave actually keeps dirt out of the carpet for the most part.  However, it can be a little difficult to get out dirt that has been ground in or trapped in the tight weave.  Understanding Berber carpet cleaning and maintenance can help extend the life of your carpet and its beauty. Berber carpets originated in Northern Africa.  The name Berber refers to the type of weave and is taken from the name of the tribe that is famous for making them in Morocco.  These valuable carpets were constructed of handspun natural fibers.  Most modern Berber carpets are made from either wool (natural fiber) or the synthetic fibers Olefin or Nylon.  Synthetic fiber constructed Berber carpets are less expensive but also have some problems.  100% wool Berber carpets are the highest quality carpets.  They are hypoallergenic and do not give off harmful gasses like some synthetic materials do.  It is best to keep the wool Berber as dry as possible during carpet cleaning because the construction and fiber work together to hold water in. Nylon Berber carpets are number two in desirability.  Olefin Berber is made primarily from recycled PET plastic bottles.  This synthetic material can let off gasses causing indoor air pollution levels to rise.  Dealing with dirt or spills right away will make keeping your Berber in tip top shape much easier.  Berber carpet cleaning starts with very regular vacuuming.  Most Berber carpets should be vacuumed once a day or more often if you can see dirt tracked in from outside.  One note on vacuuming Berber carpets: the beater bar or brush on the vacuum should not be used.  It is best to use a suction-based vacuum cleaner. When a spill occurs, you should blot it immediately with a dry, absorbent cloth.  Scrubbing can cause the Berber to pill or get fuzzy.  Low moisture carpet cleaning methods are most effective do-it-yourself methods for wool and Nylon Berbers while Olefin carpets can be steam cleaned.  It is best to have professional cleaning service routinely to ensure that your Berber carpet is getting deep cleaned appropriately.
